Overview

Developed in collaboration with Subaru, who have their own rebadged version named the BRZ, the Toyota 86 marked the company’s return to the days when it famed in affordable fun-to-drive sports cars. The AE86 is the chassis designation for the original Toyota Corolla that had a huge fan base with tuners. While the original saw the last of the production line in 1987, Toyota revitalized the trend in 2012 with the 86.
Aside from being a 2+2 fastback coupe, Toyota focused on a design that was good for the track, street legal, and didn’t cause a huge strain on the customer’s budget. Toyota and Subaru both developed a flat-four 2.0L engine that would offer a low center of gravity to the 86, whilst keeping the weight distribution 53/47 for front/rear. Since its inception, the Toyota 86 has seen action in Showroom Stock, Group A, Group N, rally, and drift racing.

While most would prefer tuning an 86 since it makes so little power, the stock version is enough for those who look not for numbers but just the feel of a sports car. The Toyota 86 has little in terms of electronics and driving aids, making the experience of a drive pure and unadulterated. In capable hands, it can do what most high-end speedsters fail to deliver. While it has mostly remained consistent throughout its life, the 2021 version may have a turbocharger to make things even more intense.

Pros
Cons
  • Excellent steering and handling
  • Lots of standard features for the money
  • Small trunk doesn’t hold much cargo
  • Acceleration is underwhelming
  • Lacks the latest driver safety aids
